The origins of Nihon Buyo can be traced back to the 8th century. Through history, it has been developed into various refined forms closely linked with important Japanese traditional performing arts such as Kagura, Noh, Kabuki and Bunraku.
The great master and Living National Treasure Nishikawa Senzo X, in a rare visit to the UK , will introduce the essence of Nihon Buyo through a talk and demonstration, with two talented dancers of the younger generation, Nishikawa Minosuke and Onoe Yukari.
The event is facilitated by Dr David Hughes, SOAS, University of London and is suitable for all ages.

NISHIKAWA Senzo X
Born into a family steeped in classical dance, Senzo first performed Nihon Buyo at the age of five. At seven, he inherited the title of head of the Nishikawa-ryu school. He has worked hard to maintain the beauty of the classical dance repertoires, and has also dedicated himself to developing innovative aspects of Nihon Buyo by choreographing new works. In recognition of his outstanding achievements, he was given the title Living National Treasure by the Government of Japan along with numerous other awards.
Senzo is the Chairman of the Nihon Buyo Foundation and the Executive Director of the Japanese Classical Dance Association.

NISHIKAWA Minosuke
Born in Tokyo in 1960, the eldest son of Nishikawa Senzo X, Minosuke undertook a theatre course at Waseda University . In 1987, he studied western history and literature at the University of London , then contemporary dance at the Laban Centre. He was awarded the Matsuo Entertainment and the Hanayagi Juoh prizes in 2004 and 2005. In 2009, he formed a group with the aim of developing Nihon Buyo beyond the historical forms.

ONOE Yukari
Yukari is the daughter of Onoe Kikunojo, the head of the Onoe-ryu school of Nihon Buyo . She was given the Performance Award and Chairman Award at the 1991 annual Nihon Buyo Contest.
In 2000, she started her career as an actress and has performed actively in film, television and on stage. In 2008, she was given the New Talent Award of the Buyo Critics Association.
