Asia House is delighted to welcome Prof. Akiko Yamanaka, Visiting Fellow at Churchill College, Cambridge, who will share with us her observations on recent developments in the transition of government in Japan and the issues behind changing bureaucratic culture.

After 50 years of Liberal Democratic Party rule, the Democratic Party of Japan’s (DPJ) election victory came with many challenges, one of which was the nature of decision-making within the Japanese government and bureaucracies. Prof. Yamanaka will examine the role of bureaucracy, the DPJ’s mandate for reform and how it manages its changing relationships with the civil service.

Akiko Yamanaka is also Visiting Professor at Hokkaido University Graduate School of International Media and Communication, and is a former Parliamentarian and Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs. Her specialised field of study is in Diplomacy, Security and Peace Building, and she is Director of the Hokkaido United Nations Association. She has written several books and received the OISCA Award for contributions to Asia and the international Soroptomist Japan’s Sen Kayoko Prize for contributions to international understanding.

The meeting will adopt the usual Asia House format and all comments will be unattributable.

Interested participants should register early for the meeting by email to pearly.tan@asiahouse.co.uk as spaces are limited.
