Dr. Gerard Lyons, an economics expert who is well known to many members, will talk about this topic which has relevance for all companies of both nationalities.
The systemic weakness of the Euro is having an effect on its value and concerns over the UK’s ability to tackle its debt has not given rise to confidence. The lack of comparative strength of both, and the challenges for Europe of the levels of government expenditure, the slowing of industrial investment and infrastructure and the overall shift of economic strength eastwards could result in difficult decisions for investors.
Dr Lyons is Chief Economist and Group Head of Global Research at Standard Chartered Bank. He is also an Economic Advisor to the Board and a member of the Bank’s Executive Forum. Previous positions include Chief Economist at DBK International and consultant to the Dai-ichi Kangyo Bank, and Chief UK economist at Swiss Bank. He is on a number of committees, including Council Member of the University of Warwick, the International Council of the Bretton Woods Committee, the operating committee of the World Economic Forum’s financial services group and is a Committee Member of the Hong Kong Association. He has published widely on economic and financial issues and is regularly invited to speak at conferences and address audiences around the world. In recent years he has testified to the US Senate Banking Committee, US Congress Foreign Affairs Committee, UK Parliamentary Committees and the EU-China Summit in Beijing.
