Second-generation Noh mask maker, Hideta Kitazawa will visit the Japan Foundation to talk about Noh mask carving and give a practical demonstration of the carving techniques used to craft these distinctive and beautiful pieces.

In addition to his practical demonstration of Noh mask carving, Kitazawa will discuss the different types of Noh mask, what they represent, and the stylistic devices used in their design. Kitazawa will also discuss his career, following in his father’s footsteps, and looks at the status and future of Noh carving in the modern age.

This is a rare and exciting opportunity to learn, at first hand, more about this distinctive Japanese tradition from a highly skilled practitioner of the younger generation.
