Nagisa Oshima Retrospect 1- 14th October, Part Two

The director who spearheaded Japan’s new wave in the 60s and 70s. Oshima was consistently inconsistent, so that a widescreen drama in colour would be followed by a standard-ratio comedy in black-and-white, a film shot in long takes would be followed by a film in which everything is fragmented, and so on. It’s the underlying commitment to honesty and a thought-through personal view that provides the continuity – and the integrity. Part two of the season features  several of Oshima’s most inventive films, a pair of very personal essays and at least one timeless masterpiece…
