David Cairns, Head of Trade and Investment at the British Embassy in Tokyo, will during a brief visit to London describe current business and investment conditions in Japan. He will be in a good position to update those with investments there and will be available to conduct one to one discussions with those who have specific questions or concerns.
David Cairns entered the Foreign Office in 1993, after an early career in banking (Nomura and Barclays, Tokyo). He has held appointments in Tokyo (’95-’98), Geneva (’02-’06) and London and has been The Director of Trade and Investment in Tokyo since 2006. As such he is responsible for the promotion of Japanese investment into the UK and for British business interest in Japan. He heads a team of 60.
After a light sandwich lunch, David will give members a briefing on the current business situation in Japan. He will give his assessment of the immediate challenges and a prognosis for the future. After time for questions and discussion, there will be the option for members to have one to one meetings with to discuss particular issues. If you wish to pose very technical questions either during the general discussion or at the end, please would you send these to events@japansociety.org.uk with sufficient detail for David to be ready with a response.
A sandwich lunch will be available from 12.00pm. The briefing will begin at 12.30pm and be followed by a Q & A session at 1.00pm with one to one discussions until 2.00pm.
