Resident in Japan for the last seven years, Matthew Kuke Kane, is an American Zen monk. He took tokudo (monastic ordination) in the Rinzai school and is currently studying in Bukokuji temple under the well known Soto master Harada Tangen Roshi. A kamikaze pilot in the war, eighty five year old Tangen Roshi is one of the last of a generation of Soto masters who also studied Rinzai-style koan meditation. Bukokuji is a thriving temple with a strict zazen schedule. The temple has a period of Zen Taiso – yoga – every morning, and one of Tangen Roshi’s senior students, Yamahata Hogen Roshi is particularly well known for having developed his Zen Taiso to a high level and taught in Europe and Australia. Kuke-sensei is a qualified and insured Zen Taiso teacher. His style is approachable, informal and friendly. He teaches Zen Taiso primarily as a way of preparing the body for the rigours of zazen, sitting meditation. Zen Taiso practice stresses physical alignment, energetic flow, and mindfulness of the body. He is experienced in teaching both in Japanese and in English.
