York St John University (Room De Grey Court 017)

Ikebana – the way of flowers by Brenda Thorpe
The simple beauty of an Ikebana arrangement creates a sense of peace and tranquillity for the both the arranger and the viewer.
It is an enjoyable art form to study in today’s hectic world.

“One flower may speak more eloquently than a full vase.”
Brenda is a 2nd Master of the Ohara School of Ikebana and has been studying Ikebana for more than 35 years.

Japanese Kimono – more than just a dressing gown!
For most people in the UK a “kimono” is just a cheap dressing gown. In Japan the kimono is just one of a huge variety of traditional Japanese clothing, many items of which are still in everyday use or used regularly for festivals and special occasions. This will be a short talk followed by a demonstration of traditional Japanese garments presented by The York Japan Society. A group established in 2005 with the aim of fostering links between the Japanese community in York and local people with an interest in Japan.

This event is free to YSJU students and £5 to the general public and external students.
