Japan Society Tohoku Earthquake Relief Fund

The Japan Society watched with deep sadness as the news unfolded of the scale of damage from the Tohoku Pacific earthquake* on 11 March 2011. We renew our heartfelt sympathy and condolences to all who have lost loved ones or have been affected by the disastrous events.
(*Officially renamed ‘The Great East Japan Earthquake’ in April 2011.)

We immediately created a relief fund to aid victims of the Tohoku earthquake with the intention of distributing all funds received to organizations working to help people in the affected areas recover from the devastating effects of the earthquake and tsunami.

We have been touched and overwhelmed by the magnificent response not only from our members who have given, and continue to give, so very generously to the Fund, but also by the individuals and groups across the UK who have donated to the Fund by organizing a huge number of fund raising events.

We are delighted to be working with the Sanaburi Foundation in Sendai to identify and support local activity throughout the region. Local NPOs are best placed to identify need and to work with members of their communities to rebuild their lives, but may need support from outside the region to deliver these projects effectively.

The Japan Society Tohoku Earthquake Relief Fund will channel all donations received to the ongoing work of voluntary and community organizations (NPOs) working in the most affected prefectures. Now that the emergency relief work of the Japanese government, the Japan Red Cross and other national and international relief agencies is well underway , and the basic physical needs of the victims of the disaster have been met, there is still an immense amount of work to be done to rebuild lives and livelihoods. We believe that grassroots organizations, working with their local stakeholders, are best equipped to deliver medium and long-term support through activities for which they themselves identify the need. We will work with representatives and support networks of local NPOs to ensure that funds are directed to appropriate organizations on the ground for maximum impact.

Details of the implementation of the Fund and the application process are on the Sanaburi website and here on the Japan Society website.
