Schools Letter Writing Project
In response to the many teachers who have come forward with the desire to help, the Education Programme invites schools in the United Kingdom to send messages of support to schools in the affected area, particularly Miyagi, Iwate and Fukushima prefectures.
Classes can create a card or write letters to support the children whose lives have been most affected by the devastating events. Items can be sent directly to the Japan Society which will then translate and distribute the messages to schools at the start of Japan’s new school year. It is anticipated that deliveries may begin from early May onwards, depending on the location of each school and the extent of damage to the local infrastructure.
Due to the expected volume of responses, the Japan Society cannot accept parcels of any size. Instead, please consider making a contribution to the Japan Society Tohoku Earthquake Relief Fund online or by telephone on 020 7935 0475. Funds raised will impact the rebuilding of lives, communities and the local charities that help support this effort. The Red Cross is also accepting donations online.
For an interesting and practical fundraising idea, please see the Crane Campaign website (www.thecranecampaign.com/) which includes downloadable templates and guidance documents. Perhaps you could stick one or two of the cranes onto your card, or attach a photo or drawing with your messages to schools.
Please post your completed letters to: Education Programme, The Japan Society, 13/14 Cornwall Terrace, London NW1 4QP. Please include your school address, details of the contact teacher and the student year group so that the education team can forward messages to the most appropriate schools.
