Supporting the creation of recovered shopping districts in Kesennuma-shi and revitalising the local community.
|Organization||Minamimachi Kashizaki Men’s Organization|
|Period||1 December 2011- 31 March 2012 (4 months)|
|Amount||1.5 million yen|
|Brief outline||Activities to encourage the revitalisation of the district through events and stamp rallies in a shopping centre in temporary accommodation.|
|Rationale for project||The applicant organization is primarily made up of shop owners and others connected to the Minamimachi shopping district of Kesennuma. This district had been devasted and the majority of the 140 shops in the Minami machi shopping district were destroyed – only 5 were able to continue in business. Having lost both shops and employment, people were beginning to leave the town. The local retailers’ associations had also ceased activity.
In order to halt the drift away from the town, members of the Men’s Organization began holding open air markets, and are now creating temporary shops to provide cover from the elements and to facilitate trade. There will be 52 units, which are reserved for those whose businesses were destroyed by the tsunami.
Within this project weekend events will be organized for 4 months to attract customers (eg morning or evening market, children’s theatrical group’s performance etc) and distribute flyers (in newspapers etc) to publicise the new shopping district’s existence, so that townspeople housed in remote.
