Announcement of a study on UK-Japan research collaboration
for the British Embassy in Tokyo

Message to senior researchers and industry officials

I am writing to invite you to contribute to a study Technopolis is carrying out for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) to establish a baseline of UK-Japan R&D collaboration, which will enable the embassy to determine the overall trend in the relationship, identify opportunities to enhance collaboration in the future and measure its effectiveness at doing so.

The study will include a survey of academics and industry officials, here in the UK and Japan, to profile the nature and extent of collaboration as well as to identify future opportunities for further collaboration and indeed support for collaboration. The online survey is mostly tick-box questions, and can be completed in around 15 minutes.

For UK academics: Further information and a link to the survey is here

For UK industry officials: Further information and a link to the survey is here

For Japanese industry officials: Further information and a link to the survey is
here

The FCO has agreed we can provide an electronic copy of the study report to all contributors, as well as an interim output, which is a bibliometrics paper using co-publication data to map overall trends in UK-Japan collaboration. International collaboration is an increasingly important aspect of research in the UK and is not well documented at present and as such your assistance with this exercise would be greatly appreciated by the FCO.

Thank you in advance for your contribution
