Chelsea Flower Show
Japan Society members are invited to visit Studio Lasso's "Garden In The Silver Moonlight" at the 2008 RHS Chelsea Flower Show. While Japanese gardens feature regularly, the designers understand that this is the first time a contemporary Japanese garden by a Japanese artist will be exhibited within the main prestigious Show Garden category. Special visit and talk at the Japanese Show Garden Tuesday 20 May 2008, 3.30 to 8.00pm at the Chelsea Flower Show Talk for Japan Society members begins at 4pm *THIS EVENT IS NOW FULLY BOOKED* Haruko Seki was awarded a bronze medal for her City Garden at Chelsea in 2007. Inspired by the moon-observation stage at Katsura Imperial Villa, the 17th century architectural masterpiece in Kyoto, Ms Haruko Seki (Landscape architect, Studio Lasso Ltd) views the garden as a contemporary interpretation of the Japanese sense of beauty and closeness to nature. The moonlit reflections on the water, turning to silver-grey with obscured contours, are a mirror to the notion of the impermanent, transient and continually evolving world we live in. Haruko attempts to create a space with depth, void and mass quality by using architectural elements: a white stone pathway and platform, designed with her collaborator, Mr Makoto Saito. The pathway leads the viewer on a journey along the pond, through to the dark bamboo woodland. Views are deliberately restricted so that the viewer's mind is focused on the elements of nature immediately in front of them. A sudden open view over the entire garden greets the viewer at the top of the platform. |
