About the Library The Japan Society Library is perhaps the oldest in Britain which deals principally with Anglo-Japanese relations. The collection numbers some 6,000 volumes, covers all aspects of Japanese life and culture and is one of the best available collections with a thread of Anglo-Japanese relations. Amongst the wide range of material, which has been assembled in the century since the establishment of the Society there are many books, including several classics of Western writing on Japan, which have been donated by their authors. The Library serves primarily as a resource for those wishing to learn more about Japan, its culture and society and incorporating all aspects of Anglo-Japanese relations. The Library's main strengths are: Older Western language books and periodicals on Japan and Japan's relations with the West covering the late Edo period through to the Taisho era (c. 1850-1926) Antiquarian Japanese woodblock-printed books published in the 18th and 19th centuries, in many cases before Japan opened to the West Photographs taken in Japan from the early 1860s to the 1950s, including some of the first images taken by a professional Western photographer in Japan The records of the Japan society from its foundation in 1891 to the present day Post-war Western writing on Japan, covering such areas as politics, economics, literature, the arts and society Archival material documenting The Japan Society's own activities (photographs, cuttings, pamphlets, letters, correspondence, etc) are the intellectual copyright of the Society and permission to cite or reproduce any part would have to be obtained from the Director (Ms Heidi Potter).
