Lord Mayor's Memoirs on East Asia and Ruth Taplin's Innovation and Business Partnering Book Launch,
Japan Discussion Group,

Chatham House, London, 11 December 2006

Review by Sean Curtin

David Brewer, the former Lord Mayor of London: "The Japan Society is doing a great job in promoting UK-Japan relations and emphasizing the importance of Japan to the UK economy."

David Brewer, the former Lord Mayor of London (2005-6), spoke at Chatham House about his considerable experiences of Japan and East Asia. He also emphasized the importance of current Japan-UK business links and the significant benefits for each country. He praised the work done by the Japan Society in this field, commenting: "The Japan Society is doing a great job in promoting UK-Japan relations and emphasizing the importance of Japan to the UK economy."

The former Lord Mayor also commended the work done by Professor Ruth Taplin who has produced several books looking at different aspects of business and commerce in Japan, Europe and America. Speaking about her recently published book, he said: "Innovation and Business Partnering in Japan, Europe and the United States is an impressive and highly readable book which offers new perspectives on internal growth in SMEs. It's a must-read for business people, managers and economists in the sector."

Before being elected Lord Mayor, he already possessed a deep understanding of Japan, having worked there for three years in the mid-seventies. He explained how in 1976 he opened the first Sedgwick Group Office in Tokyo. During his time in Japan he witnessed a great many changes in the Japanese insurance industry and financial services sector. He also gained insights into the way Japan really works.

Professor Ruth Taplin and David Brewer, who said of her new book: "Innovation and Business Partnering in Japan, Europe and the United States is an impressive and highly readable book which offers new perspectives on internal growth in SMEs.

While stationed in Tokyo he frequently visited South Korea, becoming acquainted with the situation in Seoul. In 1981, this regional knowledge helped him set up the Sedgwick Group's first office in China where he obtained the first broker's licence for Sedgwick in 1993. In the same year he was appointed Chairman of the new company, Sedgwick Insurance and Risk Management Consultants (China) Limited.

During his time in East Asia, he maintained strong links with the City of London, being a Fellow of the Chartered Insurance Institute (FCII). He was able to act as a bridge between East and West in many arenas such as through his work with the International Financial Services, London. He was the founding Chairman of their China Advisory Group as well as a member of their Japan Advisory Group. During his term as as Lord Mayor of London in 2005/2006 he helped promote ties between the UK and East Asia, visiting Japan, China and many other countries in the region in an official capacity.

The well attended event benefited from a very lively question and answer session

His presentation was followed by a lively question and answer session during which a large number of topics were discussed ranging from the policies of the new Japanese Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe, to the differences between Japanese and British companies. The talk was followed by an equally stimulating reception.
