Trains

Trains are an important form of public transport to the many commuters in Japan. One of the key features of Japanese culture is punctuallity which leaves no exception for the trains. One of the fastest trains in the world, the Shinkansen bullet train, recorded an average of 20 seconds delay time in 2006. If a train arrives more than 5 minutes late an announcement of appology is made and a “delay certifacte” is given to the awaiting passengers. Severly delayed trains that are over an hour late can even appear in the newspapers which puts immense pressure on rail workers.
