Do you love Japanese film classics, anime or contemporary cinema stories? Do you miss Japan and want to see it at least on screen? Would you like to learn and discuss about Japanese culture and society? Join us for the new Japan Society Film Club where we will chat online about films and Japan in an informal atmosphere.

In partnership with Modern Films, the Film Club in September will discuss Family Romance, LLC, the latest film by Werner Herzog, which explores themes about loneliness and connection.

Based on a real-life Japanese Company where family and friends can be made available to hire, Family Romance, LLC is about a man who is hired to impersonate the missing father of a twelve year old girl. Shot in Japan, with Japanese actors, in the Japanese language, Oscar-nominated auteur Werner Herzog brings to the screen a unique angle to recurring themes around people chasing impossible dreams.

Werner Herzog was born in Munich on September 5, 1942. He grew up in a remote mountain village in Bavaria and studied History and German Literature in Munich and Pittsburgh. He made his first film in 1961 at the age of 19. Since then he has produced, written, and directed more than sixty feature- and documentary films, such as Aguirre, the Wrath of God (1972), Nosferatu the Vampyre (1978), Fitzcarraldo (1982), Lessons of Darkness (1992), Little Dieter Needs to Fly (1997), My Best Fiend (1999), Invincible (2000), Grizzly Man (2005), Encounters at the End of the World (2007), and Cave of Forgotten Dreams (2010). Werner Herzog has published more than a dozen books of prose, and directed as many operas. He lives in Munich and Los Angeles.

Japan Society Film Clubs will take place on the first Wednesday of the month. We will recommend a film to watch in advance and meet online to discuss. Family Romance, LLC can be purchased for view via the link above, but other Japanese films are often available online for free, on DVD or on BFI player(*) which this year is celebrating Japan 2020, a special season on Japanese cinema. When possible, we will invite film experts to introduce and lead the discussion, but the event is open to all and we encourage participants to freely express their opinions and feelings about the films.

If you have any questions, please call the Japan Society office on 020 3075 1996 or email events@japansociety.org.uk.

* Films on BFI player are available with a monthly subscription (£4.99/month after 14 day free trial). As a charity organisation, BFI helps to support films and the film industry in the UK.
