We are delighted to announce that with the easing of restrictions on Golf and other outdoor sports, The Japan Society’s Annual Golf Tournament, for the Asprey and Garrard Plate, will go ahead as planned this year. The Tournament will be held at Essendon Country Club. The format will be Stableford.

The all-in price is £75, including coffee and a bacon roll on arrival, 18 holes of golf and a two-course lunch on completion. BDO, a leading member of the Japan Society, is once again generously providing the prizes and there will be competitions for ‘Nearest the Pin’ and ‘Longest Drive’.

The event will be held in accordance with any Covid-19 measures in force on the day; full details will be supplied to players once government guidance at the time has been confirmed.

Japan Society golfers have frequently played Essendon’s Old Course, but for this year’s tournament, we will be playing on the par 73 New Course, which opened in 1992 and stretches over 6,700 yards. Fittingly, the New Course has been inspired by Japanese design. It was constructed with two greens on 16 of the holes. An idea imported from Japan, each green was seeded differently; one suited for summer playing conditions and the other for winter. This creates optimal playing conditions throughout the year.

The 349 yard, par 4 1st is a picturesque opening hole, heavily guarded by a series of brand new, strategically placed bunkers framing the right side of the green.

The downhill, 146 yard, par 3 8th has two lakes surrounding the green, requiring a straight and accurate shot if you want to avoid the water.

Accuracy is also at a premium off the tee on the scenic 384 yard par 4 17th, with its sloping fairway ushering the ball left towards a water hazard and a series of bunkers, which could easily catch any golfer out.

Furthermore, the New Course and Clubhouse were built around a barn that dates back to Tudor times. Halfway house refreshments will be provided behind the barn, also courtesy of BDO.
