This summer, the De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill On Sea presents a series of work by painter Minoru Nomata in his first exhibition outside Asia. Nomata’s paintings depict imaginary landscapes that transcend time and place. Featuring architectural superstructures and topographical forms devoid of human presence, his uncanny depictions are portals into mysterious and uncertain worlds.
We are pleased to invite a small group of Japan Society members and guests to join us for a private tour of the exhibition guided by curator, Joseph Constable. Following the tour, attendees are welcome to gather for lunch or refreshments at the café bar overlooking the sea and to explore the exhibitions before reconvening for a guided tour of the De La Warr Pavilion to conclude. So, join us for some fresh sea air, art, and a peek at this iconic modernist building on England’s south coast!
Minoru Nomata grew up in Tokyo’s industrial district of Meguro during a period of rapid urban and economic growth in Japan. He became fascinated by the structural design of factories, chimneys, and water towers. At the Tokyo University of the Arts he studied European and Asian art, particularly classical Islamic patterns, and became drawn to the Machine Age and the modernism of American Precisionist, Charles Sheeler. It is these formative influences that have remained a constant in how Nomata creates each of his works, which blend the industrial, the fantastical, the archaic and the futuristic. Brutalist in beauty, aerodynamic in form and ambient in their atmosphere, Nomata’s landscapes are meditations on an ever-changing world and vehicles to alternative futures.

De La Warr Pavilion is a Grade One listed building opened in 1935 as a democratic space for art, culture and recreation, and as a hub for the wider community. The building’s design is unique, purposeful and progressive, embracing the international style while remaining quintessentially British. Today it continues to be home to an ever-changing programme of established and emerging artists.
