The Ariel Centre, a modern gallery space serving King Edward VI Community College and the local community in Totnes and the South Hams, put on the exhibition ‘The Ancient and Modern Colours of Japan’ exhibiting works drawn both from the UK and Japan each inspired and influenced by Japanese culture and tradition. Celebrating both the ancient and the modern, displays included calligraphy, indigo dyeing, weaving and origami as an art form.

To celebrate the exhibition was a week of workshops and activities with Japanese artists, performers and craftspeople and those specialising in Japanese art and craft techniques invited to teach both students and adults sushi making, origami, indigo dyeing, block printing and calligraphy. Kimono wearing and tea ceremony demonstrations also took place, as well as an evening event showcasing Japanese music and dance, an anime screening and Japanese food and refreshments.
