Sports day

Do you have a sports day at your school? What month of the year is it held in? Why do you think it is held at that time? Discuss with a partner.

What activities can you take part in at your sports day?

In Japan, most schools will hold a sports day in October. What might be the reasons for holding such an event then?

Activity – Tamaire
This is a popular sports game in Japan.

RULES

  1. Divide your class into two teams – a red team and a white team (good luck colours in Japan).
  2. Each player is then given a soft ball or a beanbag in their team’s colour. (You could also use screwed up newspaper).
  3. Each team gathers around their bucket (which is placed on top of a pole).
  4. When the whistle blows, you have a set period of time (1-2 mins) to ‘shoot’ your ball/ beanbag into the bucket. Any balls that miss, can be picked up and re-thrown.
  5. At the end of the time, the team with the most balls in the bucket, wins. When you are counting your balls at the end of the game, why not count them in Japanese!
