Free traditional Japanese sweets making workshop for children and young people ages 9 - 18!

Wagashi is a traditional type of Japanese confectionery, often served with green tea. It is typically made using plant-based ingredients like mochi (glutinous rice cakes), red or white bean paste and fruit, making it mostly vegan-friendly.

Seasonal ingredients are used to create special varieties of wagashi only available at specific times of year, like cherry blossoms in spring or chestnuts in autumn.

In this workshop, Noriko Jazayeri from Wa cafe an-an will give a short introduction to wagashi, and participants will learn to make wagashi drawing inspiration from the season of spring.

Ingredients - All ingredients used for the 4 wagashi below will be plant-based, with main ingredients being glutinous rice and adzuki red beans

  • Strawberry mochi: Strawberry, Water, Sugar, glutinous rice flour, adzuki red beans, sea salt.
  • Orange mochi: Easy pealing orange (satsuma or Clementine), water, sugar, Glutinous rice flour, white haricot beans, sea salt.
  • Camelia : White haricot beans, adzuki red beans, glutinous rice flour, natural food colourings(beat pink, yellow, green), Kanten jelling agent
