This is an illustrated lecture that will celebrate and illuminate both the ancient and modern aspects of the Tokaido Road, weaving together various stories from over four centuries of travel. The Tokaido was one of the most important routes of the Edo period (1603-1868) in Japan. The lecture will be taking place at Maidstone Museum, St Faith’s Street.

A five-week celebration featuring films, performances, talks, and workshops that explore East and Southeast Asia’s ever-evolving queer landscape. The festival includes Japan-related screenings such as The Erotics of Space, showing short films by director Hiroyuki Oki (3 May), Mari Terashima: Exquisite Tastes (6 May), With Beauty and Sorrow (Masahiro Shinoda, 1965-10 May), Blue Boy Trial (Kashou Iizuka, 2025 - 27 May) and Farewell to Spring (Keisuke Kinoshita, 1959 - 30 May). They will also screen Let’s Get Married! (3 May), featuring short films from East Asia on the topics of marriage and reproduction, and The Weavers of Nishijin (2 May), a short film directed by Toshio Matsumoto in 1961.

An illustrated lecture by artist Nigel Caple, which will celebrate and illuminate both the ancient and modern aspects of the Tokaido Road, weaving together various stories from over four centuries of travel. The Tokaido was one of the most important routes of the Edo period (1603-1868) in Japan. The event is in-person at the Museum in the Headley Lecture Theatre and online via Zoom.

This exhibition celebrates the craft traditions of Fukuoka, in southern Japan, a region renowned for its ceramics, textiles, tea, incense, and agricultural heritage. From February, a curated selection of objects and textiles from the region will be on display. The programme is accompanied by a series of tea-related talks and events, exploring the connections between tea, tradition, and making.
