17/06/2026Visions of the Tokaido Road
An illustrated lecture by artist Nigel Caple, which will celebrate and illuminate both the ancient and modern aspects of the Tokaido Road, weaving together various stories from over four centuries of travel. The Tokaido was one of the most important routes of the Edo period (1603-1868) in Japan. The event is in-person at the Museum in the Headley Lecture Theatre and online via Zoom.

This exhibition celebrates the craft traditions of Fukuoka, in southern Japan, a region renowned for its ceramics, textiles, tea, incense, and agricultural heritage. From February, a curated selection of objects and textiles from the region will be on display. The programme is accompanied by a series of tea-related talks and events, exploring the connections between tea, tradition, and making.

NODA MAP returns to Sadler’s Wells Theatre after sell-out shows A Night At The Kabuki (2022) and Love In Action (2024). Written and Directed by the founder of NODA MAP Hideki Noda, – 320°F is a Faustian descent through myth, memory and other bad ideas. Starring Sadawo Abe, Suzu Hirose, Eri Fukatsu, among others, the production will be performed in Japanese with English subtitles.

Noh Training Project UK offers a unique and exciting opportunity to experience Noh theatre through performance training - either as a weekend, one-week, or two-week intensive residency. We are especially pleased to announce that the Noh master Akira Matsui, designated Intangible Cultural Asset by the Japanese government in 1998, will return to teach in the final week. The Project is open to anyone with an interest in Noh: actors, directors, dancers, musicians, students and academics interested in extending their performance skills are encouraged to apply.
