Winner of the Mystery Writers of Japan Award and the Seiun Award, this prescient 1973 science-fiction novel foreshadowed the consequences of the 1995 Osaka-Kobe earthquake and the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami.

The story is set in 1955, when Jumpei Niki, a teacher from Tokyo, visits a fishing village to collect insects. After missing the last bus home, he is offered shelter in the village. However, he is prevented from leaving and his held captive by the villagers. Tasked with shovelling back the sand dunes threatening the village, his only company is a young woman.
