The Japanese Conversation Group provides a friendly and informal atmosphere for Japanese speakers of all nationalities to come together and speak Japanese. Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of every month.

This year’s Christmas Party will once again be held in the Ballroom of the Japanese Embassy, by courtesy of The Ambassador. We hope that many members will join us for this festive occasion and to catch up with friends.

Four years since the arrest in Tokyo of Carlos Ghosn, then chairman of Nissan, Renault and Mitsubishi Motors, Bill Emmott is joined by  Jean Barthélemy and  Philippe Riès to consider the repercussions of this extraordinary event and particularly how attitudes to cross border corporate alliances have changed.

Japan has had an exceptionally long and successful history of ceramic production and kutani ware, which originates from Ishikawa in the north-western region of Hokuriku, is one of the oldest forms of Japanese porcelain. In the second of our talks by artists from Ishikawa Prefecture, we welcome Keigo Kamide, a sixth-generation ceramicist of Kutani Choemon, a kiln that has been producing Kutani ware for over 130 years.

Kaga yūzen is a traditional dyeing technique that is used in the creation of fabrics for kimono. Join us for a special talk with master of kaga yuzen, Hitoshi Maida. This in-person event will not only allow us to engage with the speaker directly, it will also give us the opportunity to see and touch examples of work he will bring in to display.

Yoshiro celebrated his hundredth birthday many years ago, but every morning before work he still goes running in the park with his rent-a-dog. He is one of the many aged-elderly in Japan and he might, he thinks, live forever.

The Japan Society, in association with Ritsumeikan (UK), is pleased to once again welcome sixth form students back to an in-person Sixth Form Japan Day event. This event offers students the chance to experience hands on workshops with experts and listen to live speakers.
