The Japan Society is delighted to announce our inaugural lecture in memory of our former chair (1985-1995), Sir Hugh Cortazzi GCMG (1924-2018).

The Board values the opportunity to engage with members at the AGM, which is a key event for the Society and its members. We are delighted to be able to hold this year's AGM at the Embassy of Japan once again.

The Mingei Film Archive is an ongoing project to locate, restore and preserve films on the history of craftsmanship in Japan and beyond. For this lecture, filmmaker and potter Marty Gross will share with us how the Mingei Film Archive was created and developed showing films by Bernard Leach and other craftpeople in Japan.

In this lecture, Professor Screech will consider the process and reason for the deification of the shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu (1543-1616), with the ritual meanings and architectural style of the many shrine-temples erected across Japan.

This lecture will explore the often-overlooked contributions of women within the yakuza, from supportive roles played by wives (anesan) and partners to the rare but significant involvement of women in leadership.
