On Wednesday 26 November 2025, The Japan Society and Chatham House co‑hosted The Sir Hugh Cortazzi Lecture: Security in a Changing World

The spotlight was on Dame Karen Pierce DCMG, the UK Special Envoy to the Western Balkans and former British Ambassador to the United States. Drawing on a distinguished diplomatic career that includes serving as UK Permanent Representative to the UN in New York - and an early posting to Tokyo - she delivered profound insights into the evolving UK–Japan security partnership and its strategic importance amid global tensions.

As the second lecture in this annual series, honouring Sir Hugh Cortazzi’s legacy as a dedicated ambassador and advocate for Anglo‑Japanese relations, Dame Pierce discussed current collaborative initiatives - from the Global Combat Air Programme to the 2025 Carrier Strike Group visit by HMS Prince of Wales to Japan.

Introductions were given by Bronwen Maddox, Director and Chief Executive of Chatham House, and The Rt Hon Greg Clark, Chair of The Japan Society. Following the lecture, attendees enjoyed a lively reception, fostering new connections and stimulating discussions.

The succesful event underscored the deepening significance of the UK–Japan alliance and cement The Cortazzi Lecture as a vital forum for dialogue and collaboration.

The Japan Society extends its heartfelt thanks to Lady Elizabeth Cortazzi, the Cortazzi family, along with Bronwen Maddox and everyone at Chatham House for their support for this event.
