On Friday 8 May, The Japan Society co-hosted Inside the World of Shogi: An Evening with Japanese Chess Masters at The Shard campus of Warwick Business School (WBS).

Jon Inegbedion (Director of Recruitment and Business Development at WBS) opened the event, reflecting on his time in Japan on the JET Programme and his delight in establishing a connection between WBS and Japan. This was followed by co-organiser Kohtaro Hirota, providing an overview of the shogi-related events from 8-10 May, including his involvement with the Inter City Shogi Cup and workshop taking place that weekend.

Sarah Parsons shared insights into Shogi's history and its resilience throughout Japan's turbulent history. She then chaired a panel discussion between certified shogi instructors Yasushi Ishikawa (Shidō Kishi 4-dan) and Tetsuaki Sanada (Shidō Kishi 3-dan). They shared their experience navigating the Japan Shogi Association's professional apprentice school (Shoreikai), and the rigorous training required to pursue mastery. They also discussed their ongoing work to promote Shogi internationally, particularly across Europe, drawing on their teaching experiences and community-building efforts.

The event enabled engaging discussions and created valuable networking opportunities within both the existing and newly engaged Shogi community. We owe a special note of thanks to Jon Inegbedion and the Warwick Business School (WBS) for hosting this event, alongside Sarah Parsons (East West Interface) for chairing and organising this talk. We also extend our gratitude to Kohtaro Hirota (Brit-PIT Tax Consulting), Yasushi Ishikawa, Tetsuaki Sanada, the Japan Shogi Association, the Federation of European Shogi Associations (FESA), and the London Shogi Club for their vital support.
