The activities of the Japan Society are made possible thanks to the support of its members. This event is free of charge and open to all. We realise that this is a difficult time for many people. However, if you are planning to attend, and are able to consider becoming a member or making a donation, it would be hugely appreciated.

As the UK enters the third month of lock-down for many, Japan Society chairman, Bill Emmott, will be joined by Professor Lynda Gratton to discuss the impact of the pandemic on the workplace in both our countries.

Throughout her career, Lynda Gratton has been advising and imagining the workplace of the future, with the advent of improved technologies and an older, active, workforce. Her books have attracted much attention in Japan including The Shift (2012 business book of the year in Japan) and The 100-year Life, and she has been invited by Prime Minister Abe to sit on an advisory commission ‘Council for designing the 100-year-life society’.

The pandemic has, almost overnight, transformed many companies both in the UK and Japan: members of staff and their managers are getting to grips with working from home, perhaps for the first time. How much of this will last? Can we use the disruption caused by the pandemic to transform our working life for the better? What lessons should we take from previous adopters of remote working? What will the ‘new normal’ look like as coronavirus restrictions are lifted?

Professor Lynda Gratton is a Professor of Management Practice at London Business School where she directs ‘Human Resource Strategy in Transforming Companies’, which is considered the world’s leading programme on human resources.

Lynda is the founder of Hot Spots Movement and, since 2008, she has led the Future of Work Research Consortium which has brought together executives from more than 100 companies. Her award-winning work has been recognised internationally: she is a fellow of the World Economic Forum and an Advisor for @GoogleOrg’s initiative to help people prepare for the changing nature of work.

Lynda has written extensively about the interface between people and organisations. Her books cover the link between business and HR strategy (Living Strategy), the new ways of working (The Democratic Enterprise), the rise of complex collaboration (Hot Spots and Glow) and the impact of a changing world on employment and work The Shift: the Future of Work is Already Here (2014) and The 100-Year Life: Living and Working in an Age of Longevity (2017).
