Kwaidan

Applicant: Aya Nakamura
Award: £600
Field: Arts, Culture
Project:
A one-hour puppet production produced by puppeteer/puppet-maker Aya Nakamura, combining bunraku-style puppets, humanettes and video projections. Kwaidan is inspired by Japanese ghost stories and horror movies.
The production toured around the UK, in locations like Lancashire, Norwich and Maidenhead and included a series of Q&A. Alongside the tour, was an event at the Suspense Festival on the influence of Japanese Puppetry in Britain and a workshop on puppet techniques.
As well as those interested in Japanese culture, puppetry and the arts, the 'horror' aspect of Kwaidan attracted many young people interested in Japanese horror movies.
