Project:

300 years ago, Japan’s unique influence on the town of Pontypool forged the development of the world-famous Pontypool tinware. To celebrate this relationship, Torfaen Museum Trust held a week of events as a means of introducing Japan and aspects of Japanese culture to the local community.

Japanware, photographs, calligraphy, kimono and tea bowls were put on display in the gallery, as well as videos showing life in Japan, music and culture. This was complimented by a series of workshops and talks including origami and fan making, traditional Japanese decoration techniques and a talk on traditional lacquerware.

The events were a great success, with attendance of around 400 people from the local community.
