In a change to our planned celebrations for the Annual Dinner and Christmas party, two of the most important events in our calendar, the Japan Society team has been working hard to put together our first virtual celebration. So join us online from the comfort of your own home for a ‘dinner with a twist’, a special evening of entertainment and friendship, to say thank you to Japan Society members for their support over the past year. We don’t want to spoil the surprise, but suffice it to say, we have some very special and exclusive live performances, musical interludes, speeches and greetings lined up for you (see the tentative programme of the evening below).
The dinner is traditionally a black tie event and this year is no exception. So enter the party spirit and pull out your front room finery! We are also looking forward to seeing your amazing dinner decorations on your table, screen and/or background. The more imaginative the better, as there will be a competition for best zoom set up and dress!
As with our normal dinners, we want to give members a chance to chat with their friends old and new on our ‘virtual tables’. So do invite your friends and colleagues to join you, and let us know if you have any ‘seating’ preferences, as for part of the evening attendees will be split into ‘breakout rooms’ where they will have the chance to take part in activities and discussion in smaller groups. If you are new to the Society and don’t yet know many people, please don’t worry – we will ensure you meet some friendly faces.

This year’s event is free of charge and exclusive to members and their guests. However, at this special time of year, we are inviting members to give to Ashinaga UK, which empowers orphaned students with university education and leadership training. Ashinaga UK supports students as part of the Ashinaga Africa Initiative, and is also now launching a new master’s scholarship for academically excellent Japanese orphaned students to study at UK universities.
