What might be the main forces driving the economy and markets in this Year of the Tiger, 2022? What should we make of recently elected prime minister Kishida’s calls for a “new capitalism” and a “digital garden city nation”? Do they, and other moves, signal a step change or continuity? How will China’s economy perform amid that country’s “zero-covid” policy, and what might be the implications for East and South-East Asia? What other main drivers should we expect to see in Asia as a whole?

As the Tiger year begins in Japan and nears its start in China, Japan Society chair Bill Emmott is joined by two expert analysts, Jesper Koll in Japan and Jim McCafferty in Hong Kong, to discuss whether we can expect it to bring ‘strength, vitality and growth’ to the region.

Jesper Koll  has been researching and investing in Japan since becoming a resident in 1986. Over the past two decades, Jesper has been consistently recognized as one of the top Japan strategists/economists, having worked as Chief Strategist and Head of Research for U.S. investment banks J.P. Morgan and Merrill Lynch. He currently serves as Expert Director for the Monex Group and the Japan Catalyst Fund (Japan’s 1st retail investor based corporate engagement/activist fund). His analysis and insights have earned him a position on several Japanese government and corporate advisory committees, including Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike’s Advisory Board. Jesper serves as Board Director of OIST, the Okinawa Institute for Science and Technology and is a Founder and Board Director of the Asia Society Japan and heads their Policy Committee. He is one of the few non-Japanese members of the Keizai Doyukai, the Japan Association of Corporate Executives; and serves on the board of several Japan-based start-ups. He has written three books in Japanese and, in 2021, created the acclaimed video/pod-cast series Japan - Capitalism that works.  Jesper is an economist, angel-investor, patron; and yes, a Japan Optimist.

Jim McCafferty is Joint Head of APAC Equity Research at Nomura. He joined Nomura in July 2015 after five years with RBS/CIMB in Hong Kong where he was head of Asia Pacific Research. Prior to moving to Hong Kong in 2010, Jim was a top-ranked telecoms analyst and Head of Research in London with senior roles at ABN AMRO, Societe Generale and Seymour Pierce. He was named Financial Times AIM analyst of the year in 2008. In 2012 he published UK Fund Managers and Institutional attitudes towards Japanese Equities in the journal The Japanese Economy. Jim has a BA (Hons) degree in Economics from Heriot-Watt University and a MSc degree in Political Economy of East Asia from the University of Sheffield.
