Do you love Japanese film classics, anime or contemporary cinema stories? Do you miss Japan and want to see it at least on screen? Would you like to learn and discuss about Japanese culture and society? Join us for the Japan Society Film Club where we will chat online about films and Japan in an informal atmosphere.

Join us for our Film Club in June where we will discuss the refreshing and entertaining film '37 Seconds' directed by Hikari in 2019.

Yuma is a 23-year-old talented woman who dreams of becoming a manga artist. Physically disabled due to cerebral palsy and emotionally stunted by her well-meaning but overly protective mother, Yuma struggles to lead an independent life. When a magazine editor criticises her manga depictions of sex as unconvincing, Yuma embarks on a journey of sexual and personal self-discovery. Starring disabled actress Mei Kayama, 37 Seconds offers an honest, entertaining and refreshing depiction of disability and sexuality in contemporary Japan.

Hikari, also known as Mitsuyo Miyazaki, is an award-winning Japanese writer, director and producer based in Los Angeles. Originally from Osaka, she directed her debut short film Tsuyako in 2011 participating in several film festivals worldwide and receiving numerous awards including Director’ s Guild of America Student Award for the Best Female Filmmaker. In 2013, she wrote and directed a live action and animated short film A Better Tomorrow and in 2015 she directed Where We Begin, a dance short film which was screened at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York. With the script of 37 Seconds, she took part in Sundance Institute/NHK Screenwriting workshop, Film Independent’s Screen- writing and Directing Lab in 2017. The film was completed in January 2019 and had its world premiere at 2019 Berlin International Film Festival in their Panorama section. HIKARI holds an MFA in Film and TV production from USC School of Cinematic Arts.

Japan Society Film Clubs will take place on the first Wednesday of the month. We will recommend a film to watch in advance and meet online to discuss. Films are often available online for free, to rent or with subscription, on DVD/Blu Ray or on BFI player. When possible, we will invite film experts to introduce and lead the discussion, but the event is open to all and we encourage participants to freely express their opinions and feelings about the films.

If you have any questions, please call the Japan Society office on 020 3075 1996 or email events@japansociety.org.uk.
