The British Library ‘Buddhism’ exhibition explores the outstanding history of this religion through colourful manuscripts, sacred objects and precious artworks, from its beginnings in 6th-century BCE India to having over 500 million international followers today. The exhibition includes important Japanese Buddhist artefacts tracing Japan’s contribution to that history over the centuries.

The Japan Society is delighted to invite members and friends to a private view of the exhibition with Hamish Todd, Head of East Asian Collections at the British Library. We will examine the main Japanese pieces in the exhibition learning more about their historical, artistic and religious background.

This event is a great opportunity for a second view or for a last minute visit to this important exhibition which will close on 23 February.

In addition to the private view, you are also invited to join us for an early morning chanting session and meditation hosted by Robert Harrap of Soka Gakkai International, followed by a shakuhachi performance by internationally renowned shakuhachi master and ethnomusicologist Kiku Day. This session is optional, but it is essential that you let us know if you would like to participate.

If you have any questions, please call the Japan Society office on 020 3075 1996 or email us at: events@japansociety.org.
