The Japan Society Annual Golf Tournament, for the Asprey and Garrard Plate, will be held at Pine Ridge Golf Course. The format will be Stableford.
The all-in price is £75, including coffee and a bacon roll on arrival, 18 holes of golf and a sit-down supper on completion. BDO, a leading corporate partner of The Japan Society, is generously providing the prizes, as well as the halfway house and drinks with supper. There will be competitions for ‘Nearest the Pin’ and ‘Longest Drive’.
The Japan Society golfers will be playing on Pine Ridge’s course, which was named amongst Golf Monthly’s Top 100 Hidden Gems in 2022.
Opened in 1993, the course winds through gently undulating pine forest, on sandy soil that drains superbly, enabling the course to be kept in excellent playing condition all year round. At 6,458 yards from the championship tees, it’s long but still accessible to golfers of all abilities. For quality and value it has been ranked as one of the country’s top 10 public courses and golfers who discover it for the first time keep coming back for more.
The 2nd is a 404 yard par 4 that requires good shot positioning if you are to beat par. You need a straight tee shot favouring the right side of the fairway for the best angle into the green, but don’t overhit it or you’ll find the water. A 3 wood should do it. Now you should be in place to hit a good second into a raised green that slopes right to left. Aim right a little to allow the ball to run down towards the pin.
The 408 yard par 4 10th is the hardest hole on the course, and not just because of the audience on the clubhouse Terrace. Again it’s a 3 wood from the tee and you want to aim to the right to avoid the big overhanging tree. Don’t be too bold with your second as there is a steep fall off the back of the green, which can be a card wrecker. To add to the challenge, the prevailing wind is against.
The par 3 17th is one of those seemingly simple holes that can mess you up as you near the finish of your round. At just 132 yards, you only need to hit a pitching wedge or 9 iron at most, so finding the putting surface should well within your grasp. Lose concentration and miss the target, though, and you’ve got a very difficult up and down, with the green sloping from back to front.
Further details about the club, available facilities and directions can be found on the Pine Ridge Golf Club website.
