Join us for our film club in June where we will discuss another classical masterpiece by Yasujiro Ozu, The Flavor of Green Tea Over Rice.
The Flavor of Green Tea Over Rice (お茶漬の味, Ochazuke no aji, 1952) directed by Yasujiro Ozu presents a subtle portrayal of a marriage in post-war Japan. The film revolves around Taeko and Mokichi, a middle-aged couple whose relationship is strained by differing values. While Taeko embraces modernity and socializing, Mokichi finds solace in simplicity. Tensions escalate when Taeko disapproves of her niece's engagement, revealing deeper rifts in their marriage. Ozu delicately navigates themes of generational conflict, societal expectations, and evolving gender roles. Through quiet moments and understated performances, the film offers a profound reflection on the complexities of human relationships amidst societal change.
Yasujiro Ozu (1903–1963) was a pioneering Japanese filmmaker celebrated for his distinctive style and profound exploration of human relationships. Born in Tokyo, Ozu's career spanned over three decades, during which he directed numerous critically acclaimed films, including Tokyo Story and Late Spring. His minimalist approach, characterized by static camera shots and a focus on everyday life, earned him international acclaim and influenced generations of filmmakers.

It take place on the first Wednesday of the month. We recommend a film to watch in advance and meet online to discuss. Films are often available online for free, to rent or with subscription, on DVD/Blu Ray or on BFI player. The event is open to all and we encourage participants to freely express their opinions and feelings about the films.
