Join The Japan Society at St John's Wood Library for an afternoon celebration of the Tanabata Star Festival for children and their family and friends! Tanabata is one of the biggest summer events in Japan. Depending on the region, it is celebrated in Japan on either 7 July or 6-8 August.
2.00pm - Kamishibai performance of The Tanabata Story
2.30 – 4.30pm - Drop in for origami and crafts where you can make fun festival decorations!
The Tanabata Story is presented by Haruka Kuroda (from the British Japanese theatre company; A Thousand Cranes) using kamishibai, a traditional form of illustrated storytelling from Japan. Come along to find out the legend behind the festival! The performance will last approximately 25mins and is recommended for children aged 3+ and their families; please arrive before the 2pm start to get settled.
After the performance, The Japan Society will help you to make origami decorations and tanzaku wish cards for display or to take home. Craft activities will run from approximately 2.30pm until 4.30pm
