The Third Love follows a married woman who escapes into dreamlike lives set across different historical periods, experiencing love in new forms. As these imagined worlds deepen, she begins to question marriage, desire, and the limits of intimacy. The novel quietly blurs reality and fantasy to explore how love transforms over time.

Hiromi Kawakami (1958-) is a Japanese novelist and short‑story writer acclaimed for her subtle, unconventional explorations of intimacy, everyday life, and emotional disquiet. Her work often focuses on characters who live slightly outside social norms, rendered in a calm, precise style laced with quiet surrealism. She won the Akutagawa Prize for the short story “A Snake Stepped On” and is widely known for Strange Weather in Tokyo. Other notable works include The Nakano Thrift Shop, Record of a Night Too Brief, and Under the Eye of the Big Bird.
