Immediately following this Friday’s Biden-Suga summit at the White House – with Yoshihide Suga becoming the first foreign government leader to meet Joe Biden in person since his inauguration –  Japan Society chairman Bill Emmott is joined by two distinguished diplomats: Kuni Miyake, president of the think-tank Foreign Policy Institute and James P Zumwalt, Chairman of the Japan-America Society of Washington DC to discuss the state of US – Japan relations and their implications.

The Biden-Suga meeting follows closely on the much-commented upon summit of the “Quad” of the US, Japan, India and Australia on 13 March, “two-plus-two” security talks between the US and Japan on 16 March and a trilateral meeting of the national security advisers of US, Japan and Korea on 2 April. It will come as no surprise to those who joined our recent webinar on US-China relations that China will feature high on the agenda for the Biden-Suga summit, but also under discussion will be climate change in the lead up to the G7 in Cornwall in June and COP26 in November in Glasgow and the post-pandemic recovery.

Kunihiko (Kuni) Miyake is president of the Foreign Policy Institute, a private Tokyo think-tank, and research director at the Canon Institute for Global Studies (CIGS). During a distinguished career with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, his posts included: Director of the US-Japan Security Treaty Division (1998-2000); Minister at the Embassies of Japan in Beijing (2000-2004) and Baghdad (2004) and, most recently, Deputy Director-General of the Middle East Bureau.

James P Zumwalt is chairman of the Japan America Society of Washington DC.  Prior to retiring from the State Department, he served as the United States Ambassador to the Republic of Senegal and the Republic of Guinea Bissau.  Previously he was responsible for US policy toward Japan and Korea as Deputy Assistant Secretary in the State Department Bureau of East Asia Affairs.  When the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami struck Japan in 2011, Ambassador Zumwalt was the Deputy Chief of Mission at the US Embassy in Tokyo, where he coordinated the United States’ efforts to assist the Japanese Government’s response to that crisis.  He also served overseas in Kinshasa, Kobe, and Beijing.
