Inspire children this half term with a creative haiku workshop; come along to the Japan Society’s in-person session led by internationally acclaimed poet, Paul Conneally!

We’ve all heard of haiku, but did you know that haiku are usually seasonal or capture a moment in time? And they don’t even have to be 5-7-5 syllables! In this workshop, children and their carers will find out what really makes a haiku and join Paul on a short ‘haiku walk’ to get the ideas flowing before writing their own poems!

This event is being hosted to celebrate JAL Foundation’s 17th World Children’s Haiku Contest and is free and open to all.

Event Schedule

2.15pm - Join us for light refreshments at Calthorpe Community Garden

2.30pm - Session starts

2.45pm - Join Paul on a ‘Haiku Walk’ of the surrounding area

3.15pm - Write your own haiku

3.35pm - Share and read aloud haiku

3.45pm - Session ends. Stick around for refreshments and origami activities until 4.45pm!

Paul Conneally is an internationally acclaimed haiku poet and artist. He has led numerous workshops for children and adults in museums, schools, galleries and in his favourite place - ‘outdoors’. He has had the pleasure of leading the judging panel of the JAL Haiku Competition for a number of years and is looking forward to leading this workshop!

Calthorpe Community Garden is an inner city community garden and centre which exists to improve the physical and emotional wellbeing of those who live, work or study in Camden and surrounding areas.
