Sir Laurie Bristow, British Ambassador to Russia from 2016 -2020, and Tadashi Maeda, Governor of the Japan Bank for International Cooperation, join Bill Emmott to discuss the war in Ukraine. In this special off the record webinar for Japan Society members, they will consider where the policies of our respective governments concerning the war and Russia look like going next, and how both the political and business worlds now think about investment and business relationships with Russia.

It is worth recalling that the Russian invasion of Ukraine on 24 February was preceded on 4 February by a joint statement between Russia and China which declared the pair had a strategic partnership which “knows no limits”. The unprecedented toughness and unity shown by the G7’s economic sanctions on Russia, and the related provision of humanitarian and military aid showed that the West’s unity had also bust through previous limits.

As this tragic situation evolves, more previously unexpected developments look likely, with especially important decisions to come on energy imports from Russia, both in Europe and Japan. What, then, are the implications for Japan and the UK? What will be the future of business relations with Russia, and the longer term impact on trade and diplomatic relationships across Europe and Asia?

Sir Laurence (Laurie) Bristow KCMG was British Ambassador to Afghanistan from June to November 2021.
