The Japan Society is delighted to welcome the economist and journalist Richard Katz in an online conversation with Bill Emmott.

This conversation will centre on Richard's new book, The Contest for Japan's Economic Future: Entrepreneurs vs Corporate Giants, which explores the chance of a new wave of entrepreneurs emerging in Japan thanks to social change, digital opportunities and new attitudes among the elite and the public. Having been a long-standing critic of corporate Japan, Richard has become more optimistic that change could finally be taking hold.

Richard Katz is a Senior Fellow at the Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs as well as a Special Correspondent for Weekly Toyo Keizai. He was editor-in-chief of The Oriental Economist Report and now publishes a Substack blog called Japan Economy Watch. Richard's earlier books were Japan: The System That Soured (1998) and Japanese Phoenix (2003). He has published op-eds and essays in publications such as Foreign Affairs, The Financial Times, and the Wall Street Journal Asia.

Bill Emmott serves as chair of The Japan Society. In addition, he serves as chair to of the International Institute for Strategic Studies and the International Trade Institute.  He has authored many books on Japan and is the former editor-in-chief of The Economist
