Part of our series of events on ageing population, for our film club in October we invite you to watch and discuss the dystopian drama Plan 75 directed by Chie Hayakawa.
Plan 75 (2022) is a sci-fi drama presenting a thought-provoking commentary on the treatment of the elderly and exploring themes such as aging, social value and collective responsibility in contemporary Japan. Set in a near-future, Japan is facing a severe aging crisis, and to combat it, the government introduces a programme encouraging elderly citizens to voluntarily euthanise themselves to alleviate societal burdens. The film intertwines the lives of three main characters: Michi, an elderly woman contemplating the plan; Hiromu, a government employee who promotes the programme, and Maria, a Filipina caregiver who assists those opting for euthanasia.
Chie Hayakawa (1976-) is a Japanese film director and writer. She was born in Tokyo and studied film and media at the Tokyo University of Arts and photography at School of Visual Arts in New York City. She has worked in various roles in film production and as an assistant director for Japanese filmmaker Hirokazu Koreeda. She has directed several short films, including the segment Plan 75 for in the omnibus film Ten Years Japan. Based on that short film, she made her debut film, Plan 75 in 2022 which won the Caméra d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival.
Do you love Japanese film classics, anime or contemporary cinema stories? Do you miss Japan and want to see it at least on screen? Would you like to learn and discuss about Japanese culture and society? The Japan Society Film Club is an online space to chat about films and Japan in an informal atmosphere. It take place on the first Wednesday of the month. We recommend a film to watch in advance and meet online to discuss. Films are often available online for free, to rent or with subscription, on DVD/Blu Ray or on BFI player. The event is open to all and we encourage participants to freely express their opinions and feelings about the films.
