Obon Matsuri Day
Applicant: Scout Road Academy
Award: £500
Field: Culture
Project:
An extension of the school’s lunchtime Japanese language and culture club, this exploration of Japanese culture offered the 109 pupils at Scout Road Academy the chance to experience Japanese traditions and cultural activities, through dance, music, costume and food: specifically traditional obon dance, tanabata, sampling festival food, taiko drumming, and wearing yukata.
The day ended with an invitation to parents to visit the school to watch the children perform a 'tanko bushi' dance (Coal Mine Song) together.
