Master Woodblock Carver Motoharu Asaka: European Tour

Master Woodblock Carver Motoharu Asaka: European Tour
Applicant: Temple University
Award: £450
Field: Education, Arts, Culture

Project:

During a 10-day visit to the UK during the autumn of 2015, master woodblock carver, Motoharu Asaka, accompanied by Louise Rouse, attended five universities, two printmaking studios and an art and design sixth form college with the intention of promoting ukiyoe and to introduce the techniques and ideas to young artists with an interest in printmaking.

Through a series of practical workshops, printmaking demonstrations and lectures, more than 200 participants were given the rare opportunity to learn about the art of woodblock printing from a master, who had trained for 17 years to reach his status and had a successful 47-year career in ukiyoe.

Feedback from all sessions was enormously positive, and many young and emerging artists were encouraged to explore the techniques further in their own practices.
