Threads of Silk and Gold - Ornamental Textiles from Meiji Japan
Applicant: The Ashmolean Museum
Award: £1000
Field: Culture, Education
Support for: Family activities and exhibition tours

Project:

Threads of Silk and Gold, the first exhibition devoted to the art of Meiji textiles ever to be held outside of Japan, included some 40 examples of the highest quality Meiji textiles pieced together from around the world. The outstanding collection is one of the finest and most comprehensive of its type in existence and had never been seen before on display.

Alongside the exhibition, the Ashmolean Museum planned a series of participatory events and activities designed to help visitors explore the themes and stories of the exhibition more fully. Events included tours, lectures, practicial workshops and family activities.

The Japan Society helped to support a free family trail, designed by the museum education team to help younger visitors to learn more about the pieces on display and to encourage intergenerational learning, as well as a series of weekly tours led by experienced and specialist guides.
