Surviving Tsunami: Photographs in the Aftermath of the Great East Japan Earthquake

The Rikuzentakata Disaster Document Digitization (RD3) Project was set up in the aftermath of the 2011 tsunami to salvage and conserve historic collections from two museums and a city library destroyed in Rikuzentakata, Iwate Prefecture. Following a trip to Japan, Pitt Rivers Museum curator Philip Grover, working with the RD3 project, organised an exhibition of a number of these photographic prints alongside videos to be displayed at the museum.

Support from the Japan Society enabled the museum to acquire a 10 year license from NHK to show Tomoko Kamata's highly relevant news report about the tsunami and the work of the RD3 project.
