Dream Colours: Focus on Japan – Online launch

Applicant: Modern Poetry in Translation
Award: £750
Field: Arts, Culture

Project:

In Spring 2020, Modern Poetry in Translation published its first ever focus in its 50-year history on Japanese poetry, Dream Colours: Focus on Japan.

Funding from the Japan Society was given in support of a launch event, initially organised to be part of the Newcastle Poetry Festival, due to its strong Japanese department. However, due to COVID-19 restrictions the launch was moved online.

The event, which included a conversation between Poet Sayaka Osaki and translator Polly Barton, as well as a recorded video from Poet Kei Okamoto, being streamed online meant visitors from all over the world were able to attend. This in turn helped to introduce contemporary Japanese poetry, and Modern Poetry in Translation in general, to a much wider audience.
